Drawing, drawing, drawing....

Great Drawing weekend at Dartmoor Arts with Laurie Steen and Paul Thomas who set up the Jerwood Drawing competition. Two very different approaches. Laurie focused on observational and shadow drawing using a variety of drawing materials. Paul Thomas focused on subjective drawing on a large scale 4ft by 5ft using only charcoal and an eraser, creating a series of different marks and building up one drawing based on our subconscious influences and experiences over a period of 7 hours.
10th November Drawing from the Heart with Louise Watkins
The theme Louise has chosen for this workshop is based around the mysterious Japanese aesthetic Wabi Sabi, The opulence of late Autumn is the perfect time for exploring this elusive and rich concept, …. the Japanese art of finding beauty in the natural passing of time.  See earlier blog for more details.
The day runs from 9.30am - 5pm and includes tuition, life model, all art materials and equipment, refreshments and a delicious lunch. Cost £50.00 To book a place contact   HERE

....a time for observation - fantastic workshop at Honeycomb Studios

Laurie Steen's  inspirational workshop '...a time for observation'  was a brilliant and  informative day where students investigated working on different types of paper in graphite and charcoal and explored Laurie's particular methodology of treating  paper with gesso and using low odour paint thinner and safflower oil to change the nature of the line and for over drawing.  This intensive day included a series of drawings taken from leaves, branches and autumn flora and fauna, quick drawings, shadow drawings and very detailed macro drawings.  Laurie is also one of the teachers on the forthcoming  Drawing Weekend at DartmoorArts, 20th and 21st October.  We look forward to welcoming Laurie back early in 2013.

Laurie Steen Workshop 1st October 2012

........  a time for observation,

Using objects from nature for our subjects, we will delve into observational drawing, gesture drawing, shadow drawing and 1:1 drawing; while experimenting with different drawing mediums. The process could be intimate and observational but could also expand into personal and explorative drawings that become recordings of the encounter and experience. We will also hopefully tap into our history and connection to nature and use this to nurture and push our own figuration within the landscape. The process of which is fundamental to drawing. This day might inspire if you have been wanting to move from drawing the figure to drawing within the landscape.

Monday 1st October 9.30am - 4.30pm lunch and materials included £45.00

Her 2011 workshop was extremely popular and very successful.   This day long workshop in drawing is suitable for all levels and is an opportunity to experiment, its a workshop day with a difference! The morning will focus on drawing from the life model. In the afternoon we will use a collection of flora and fauna from around the studio to draw a series of inspirational still life studies in rhythm with the seasons.

Learning the fascinating drawing techniques inspired by the work of Cecil Collins and Frederick Frank. The day begins by grinding your own ink, using drawing tools from found materials such as feathers and wood, and learning about the raw pigments of Sumi ink and red chalk. It aims to be a friendly and studious day. To spark inspiration for other aspects of your creativity, such as painting, writing, photography perhaps even gardening! You will learn innovative techniques to develop your drawing skills. Limited places, book now.

Louise Watkins studied Fine Art at Exeter School of Art – Plymouth University and Central St. Martins, London. After graduating she undertook an apprenticeship in traditional methods of painting and Iconography. She has painted in Glastonbury and Sherborn Abbeys and Exeter Cathedral and collaborated on commissions for York Minster.

“Drawing has been central to my life for as long as I can remember. There is so much to draw inspiration from; it is a way of responding to beauty. I am inspired by the teaching methods of Cecil Collins and Frederick Franck. This process of drawing requires total involvement with the materials and tools. Spending time grinding the ink, the process becomes a meditation.  Some of the most trusted drawing tools are those found while out walking. Drift wood makes a very good pen, feathers turn into quills and brushes. I enjoy teaching very much, sharing my love of art and nature with others. This quote sums up how I feel… “

‘While drawing grasses I learn nothing ‘about’ grass, but wake up to the wonder that there is grass at all.’ Frederick Franck

Successful Colour in the Landscape 2 Day Workshop

Our 2 day Colour in the Landscape Workshop with Ashley Hanson on Friday 9th and Saturday 10th March was a great success.  A mixture of professional artists, students and  people getting back into their practice attended the workshop.  The group focused on making the transition from observational drawing in the landscape, exploring methods of abstracting the subject matter to create work in oils and acrylics, investigating colour, mark making and line. In the final critique it was fasinating to compare the different approaches to the same subject matter.  Everyone came away from the workshop equipped to further inform their practice.  We will be running further workshops with Ashley later in the year please get in contact if you are interested. Spaces are limited to 10 people.  sara@honeycombanimation.co.uk

Ashley carries out his own workshops in Cornwall and is also running two, 5 day residential painting holidays this year. For more information go to http://ashleyhansonart.blogspot.com/
